India's Culture Heritage
Indian Culture deals with the study of a different form of temples in Hindu culture. Temple's architecture based on Shilpa Shastra and Vastu Shastra. Temples built with perfect geometry and fixed mathematical construction in the way of Hindu life. Let's discuss some temples and architecture:
1. Nagara Temple :
Nagara Temple is based on the Northern Style having prominent features like Sikhara(tower), Garbhagaria(Holy place), and Mandaps(Pillard Hall). Sikhara is a tower of the northern temple and it is curved in size contains a spherical slab with ribs on the top. Garbhagaria or a womb chamber where the image of the main deity or Murti is placed in a bare cell. Mandapas are the entrance of the temple and a place of worship of saint and also it is used in performing marriage rituals.
The three types of Nagara temples related to the size of Shikhara are Rekha Prasad/Retina(It is the name of top and used for housing the Garbhagira), Phamsana(Phamsana buildings are inclined border and their roofs are composed to several spherical slabs pointed to the center of the temple), and Valabhi(the upward part is rectangle in shape and called as wagon vaulted building).
2.Dravida Temple:
Dravidian Temples are made up of South Indian Style contains Vimana( Main Tower), Gopuram(entrance gateways), and Dvarapalas( Sculptures are guarding the temple). It includes all Pallavas, Pandya, Vijayanagara, and Cholas Dynasties which were ruled in around 273 BC. Example of these temples are
1. Shore Temple: Situated in Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram District. It is built in such a way that the first ray of sunlight falls on Lord Shiva's idol.
2. Prambanan Temple: This is located in Bokoharjo village in Prambhan District. Architecture is mixed with both Buddhism and Dravadianism.
3. Vittala Temple: This is an ancient monument in Hampi built by the Vijayanagar empire. The temple has a splendid area that is surrounded by high compound walls and three towering gateways.
3.Vesara Temple:
Vesara is the combination of Dravidian and Nagaria Temples and having its own origin characteristics. They are used in Deccan, part of north India and Central India. In the mid-seventeenth century a new style temple in Karnataka was built by the Chalukya ruler. The shape of Shikhara is pyramidical, contains squared halls, and squared Garbhagira. Examples are
1. Durga Temple(Aihole): The wall was covered with a different goddess and Durga means the protector or fortified.
2. Virupaksh Temple (Pattadkal): Built by queen Lokamahadevi to celebrate his husband's victory against Pallavas of Kanchi.
